“Occult activity, human sacrifice, ritualistic dancing,” Cary named off the possibilities. “We’ll see what Aurora finds.”

“For now, we’ll keep the investigations away from those stairs. We need to wait until we have more information. Everyone’s safety is the priority here.”

“Good.” Grant nodded.

“What are you gonna do now?”

“I’m kinda tired,” Grant fibbed innocently. “That, uh, weather report took a lot out of me. I know it’s kinda early, but I think I’m gonna go to bed.”

“Yeah, yeah, of course.” Cary patted Grant’s shoulder. “We’re gonna finish our sweep and then let Aurora and Bachata have a go at it. We wanna rotate at least twice before we shut down for the night.”

“New investigation tomorrow? Or right into review?”

“Actually.” Finn exchanged a look with Grant. “We’ve been talking to Janice about that.”

Grant couldn’t help the face he made hearing her name.

“She wants us to take this on a one-two schedule. One night of investigating followed by two days of review and rest.”

“Really? She almost soundsconcerned.”

“Concerned we’re gonna look like shit on camera if we’re sleep deprived,” Cary joked. “She wants us to look pretty plus spend more time analyzing the evidence. She’s also gotten us access to some guys who can help enhance video and audio too.”

“How helpful of her. Are we sure this is the real Janice?”

“I know she’s not your favorite person,” Cary tried, “but—”

“She’s an asshole,” Finn said flatly.

“Yes, she’s an asshole. She doesn’t understand, okay? And she never fuckin’ will, just like me and Finn promised you. But she really does care about the show. If she gives you any more shit, we’ll have another talk with her.”

“No, it’s all right.” Grant shook his head. “You’re right. She does care about the show, and that’s what’s important. I can stay out of her way, okay? You two need to worry about catching kickass irrefutable evidence.” He heard an abrupt snore. “And keeping your camera crew awake.”

Judging by the snore’s deep tenor, it was Mack.

Cary and Finn both still seemed concerned, but Cary conceded, “Okay, if you’re sure.”

“I’m sure.” Grant smiled. “You guys have fun!”

“Good night, Grant.”

“Night, Grant,” said Finn.

“Night guys!” Grant turned his flashlight beam into the hallway to navigate his way back to the command center.

Bachata, a burly Hispanic man with long dark hair, and Aurora, a petite Korean woman with a neatly trimmed pixie cut and glasses, were sitting shoulder to shoulder at the desk watching the many display screens.

“It’s an orb,” Bachata was saying.

“No, that’s clearly dust,” argued Aurora. “Maybe a bug.”

“Look at how it’s moving!”

“Okay, so it’s a bug.”

“But it’s glowing!”

“You mean it’s reflecting light… like abug.”
