“Shit.” Grant sat up and rubbed his face. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep like that! What time is it?”

“Just a little after midnight.”

“I’m so sorry!”

“Hey, hey, it’s really okay.” Huck smiled warmly.

Grant was pretty adorable half-awake, his lids still a bit heavy from sleep and his cheeks pink. He blinked a few times, focusing now on Huck and smiling. “You really came.”

“Of course I did.” Huck sat up, folding his legs and turning so he was facing Grant. “I’m not gonna miss a hot date.”

Oh, the way Grant blushed was priceless.

“Y-yeah, well, that’s nice of you.” Grant flashed a quick smile and wrung his hands. “Uh, so, anything exciting happen? Any more wild pinching?”

“No, I think Sip is done for tonight,” Huck replied. “He definitely likes them, though. So, uh, maybe they should put a camera in their room. Never know what he’s gonna do.”

“I’ll be sure to tell them that.” Grant chuckled. “So, Sip. Precipitation. He’s the bride?”

“Yeah. He died wearing his sister’s wedding dress. There was this whole thing with him seducing his sister’s betrothed while wearing said dress.”

“Wow!” Grant laughed. “So, he’s just always been trouble.”

“Pretty much.” Huck grimaced. “I mean, it got him murdered ’cause his sister wasn’t really happy about the whole screwing her betrothed thing, but Sip doesn’t seem to regret it.”

“I’d like to meet him too,” Grant said. “Just to chat. I’m not interested in the pinching or whatever. I’m just… wow. I can’t believe how strong you all are.”

“We are?”

“Most spirits can only talk in short bursts. I’m lucky if it’s a word or two, maybe a few sentences.” Grant shrugged. “I’ve only had a few that could carry on a conversation like this before. The activity here is incredible. I’d love to know why.”

“I wish I could tell you,” Huck said. “I’d always heard this place was super haunted, heh. Never thought I’d be one of the people haunting it.”

“I’m sorry.” Grant offered his hand. “Really.”

“It’s okay.” Huck reached out, watching his fingers taking on a fresh color and smiling when he could feel Grant’s hand against his own now. “It was quick at least.”

“Do you… uh…”

“Remember what happened? Yeah, I do now. I was here to make a replacement for one of those lion things on the Eastern Stairs. They wanted me to look at some moulding too, so up the ladder I went, and when I came back down, the Thing grabbed me. I fell down the stairs, and I’m pretty sure I broke my neck.”

“Fuck.” Grant squeezed Huck’s hand. “Ouch.”

“It’s okay, really.” Huck loved the warmth of Grant’s touch, and he had zero intention of letting go of Grant’s hand right now. “I mean, it sucks I’m dead and trapped here for, like, ever.”

“You really can’t leave? There wasn’t a light or anything when you died? Voices calling you?”

“No. Nothing like that. I remember hitting the floor, everything went black, and then I woke up. But it sucked because everything was all fuzzy and gray, and it’s been that way ever since. Except you.”

“Me?” Grant blinked in surprise.

“Yeah. You’re really bright. I can totally see the color of your hair and your freckles…” Huck realized he was staring pretty hard, and he glanced away. “We can tell. When someone is a medium.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. You kinda glow.”

“Wow.” Grant smiled. “That’s so cool.”
