He had tried to get Rebecca and Precipitation to help him, but they were much more interested in playing with the PP crew and couldn’t be bothered. Huck couldn’t get them to chip in with spying on Janice either, so he was on his own for what had to be the most boring and miserable investigation in the history of investigations.

After listening to Janice sit through recordings of the monthly budget audit this morning that stole three hours of Huck’s afterlife that he’d never get back, he followed her downstairs. She was no doubt on her way to bother Finn and Cary over said recordings she’d just listened to, and Huck ran into his fellow oxygen intolerant friends coming through the side of the wall up the steps.

“Hey!” Huck waved. “You know you guys look so damn weird when you do that.”

“Don’t be jealous. You’ll get the hang of it one of these days, darling.” Rebecca batted her eyes as she melted by him. Half of her body was down in the staircase so only her upper torso was visible.

“Having fun on your little investigation?” Precipitation teased, equally melted into the stairs as he strolled through behind Rebecca.

“Yeah. A fuckin’ blast.” Huck snorted. “What are you two doing?”

“Going to find those delicious hosts,” Precipitation replied. “They’re the only thing that’s any fun around here.”

“Wait, they’re not downstairs?”

“No. That’s why we’re going upstairs,” Rebecca said. “Darling, please. Get yourself together. Pay attention.”

“I am certain that my dear Finn and his very scrumptious bottom are currently being devoured by Mrs. Delgado-Charles and I intend to watch every filthy second,” Precipitation declared as he continued up through the stairs in a huff.

“You are such a disgusting scag,” Rebecca teased.

“Says the festering ass sore who’s coming with me.”

“Skank.”

“Whore.”

“Wait, wait!” Huck turned around to frown at them. “Finn is upstairs with Myrna right now?”

“God, yes.” Precipitation groaned in frustration. “They’ve been having themselves sordid physical congress nearly every night this week. Where have you been?”

“Huh?” Huck was frozen in place now by shock.

“Obviously he’s been too wrapped up in his dear little investigation.” Rebecca walked out of the stairs to stand at the top step so she could roll her eyes and pop her hip in Huck’s direction. “Really, darling. I worry about you.”

“They don’t go for very long, but while they do?” Precipitation sighed and laid his hand over his brow. “Oh, it’s beautiful.”

“We always leave before the pillow talk. It’s so boring.” Rebecca made a face. “Like when he was asking her about her family—”

“Hold up!” Huck looked back over his shoulder to see Janice hitting the bottom step and continuing on her way. He quickly asked Rebecca, “They talk about their family? Really? Has she said anything about Janice?”

“Who?” Rebecca wrinkled her nose.

“Janice!” Huck groaned. “Her daughter!”

Rebecca and Precipitation exchanged a confused pout.

“Janice is Myrna’s daughter, right? Come on.” Huck pleaded. “Has Myrna said anything that might be helpful?”

“I told you that we leave before the pillow talk,” Rebecca replied, “but you’re more than welcome to join us and have a little listen in if you’d like.”

Huck glanced back to see Janice was already long gone from the stairs, and he was torn with indecision. He had promised Grant that he would stay with her until it was time to ring the bell for Mrs. Charles tonight, but there was a small chance that listening in on Myrna and Finn would be more beneficial.

Besides, if Rebecca and Precipitation were right, Janice would be busy for a while looking for Finn and having no idea he was right upstairs with her mother…

Fuck it.

“Hey!” Huck hurried up the stairs after Rebecca and Precipitation, who’d left him standing there. “Wait up! I’m coming!”
