“What is the matter with you? Stop, you’re going to wrinkle my dress.”

“Look, just trust me. We have got to go find Rebecca. I think something really fucked up is happening.”

“What?”

“I don’t fucking know, just come on!”

They raced upstairs to Finn’s room, but there was no sign of Finn and Myrna or Rebecca. Judging by the rumpled sheets, they’d just finished their intimate time together, and Rebecca was nowhere to be seen. Desperate to find her, Huck forced himself to melt through the walls as he called out her name, with Precipitation hot on his heels.

Just as he dropped down to the floor beneath them, Huck saw a flicker of a shadow slipping through the wall into the hallway. He chased after it, and he was confronted by another massive blob of shades.

There was a fur wrap being dragged behind it.

“Becks!” Huck shouted as he dove forward, grabbing at the shades and pulling them back.

“Oh no! Rebecca!” Precipitation joined him, and he tore at the shades. “Unhand her at once, you vile sacks of excrement! Right now!”

It was much easier to chase the shades off with Precipitation’s help, and Huck didn’t have to sneeze out any energy or whatever it was he’d done before. He got a hold of Rebecca’s arm and Precipitation the other, and they pulled her out to safety while the shades hissed and ran away.

“Oh, sweetie!” Precipitation embraced her and petted her hair urgently. “Oh, my sweet darling girl. Are you all right?”

“I believe so?” Rebecca appeared dazed and a bit unsteady, and she wobbled against Precipitation’s chest. “I am so very grateful for the rescue, but… hmm.”

“What is it, you revolting scag?”

Rebecca gasped, and she slapped Precipitation right across the face. “How dare you! No one speaks to me that way!”

“Rebecca, that’s how he always speaks to you,” Huck soothed. “It’s like your thing. I don’t know why, but that’s just what you two do.”

“What is wrong with you?” Precipitation scowled.

“There is nothing wrong with me! There’s something terribly wrong with both of you!” Rebecca declared, flipping her fur wrap around herself. “No one would ever dream of speaking to me in such a vulgar manner. Do you have any idea who I am? I’m…” She paused. “I’m afraid… I’m afraid I don’t actually know, but I am sure that I would never let anyone insult me!”

“Fuck.” Precipitation groaned. “She doesn’t remember who the hell she is!”

“It’s okay. Just talk to her. Get her to remember like I did with you.” Huck turned to leave.

“Wait, where are you going?” Precipitation demanded. “You’re just going to leave me with her like this?”

“Just keep talking to her, okay?” Huck shook his head. “This can’t be an accident. Both of you attacked by shades at practically the same fucking time? No, something’s going on. I gotta go find Grant.”

“Ugh. Good luck, sweetie.” Precipitation pouted at Rebecca. “Now you listen here, you fetid cunt boil, your name is Rebecca Flynn. You were an overrated actress, an absolute whore, and I am your dearest friend.”

Huck left before he could hear Rebecca’s certainly excited response, and he hurried back downstairs to check the office. No one was there. He forced himself to melt again, barreling through walls to find the rest of the crew in front of the morgue getting ready to go inside.

Everyone was here except for Janice and Grant.

Even Myrna was standing around with Finn, watching everyone preparing for the big investigation.

The knot in Huck’s stomach continued to twist.

He ran from one end of the hotel to the other, back and forth over and over again. He even bolted back by Rebecca and Precipitation, who were still arguing, and Huck’s heart sunk into despair. Peeking through the front lobby windows showed him that Grant’s car was here, and Huck found Grant’s phone on the desk in the office on his second trip through.

He had no idea where else to look, and he didn’t know what to do.

Grant was gone.

No…
