All the things I’ve spent a lifetime pushing down.

And there I was thinking that all feelings had to be bad, like the way I first learned them.

But Eve’s changed all that, just by existing. She’s making me see and feel the world in a way I never knew I could.

The driver lingers long enough to thaw out some, and Grosvenor eventually returns, letting me know that the chopper will be here in no time. He takes the driver with him after I nod approval. Thanking him for his efforts today.

Then we’re alone again.

Just Eve and me. The only way I like it, I’m discovering.

“That was so sweet of you…” She coos, “Giving him a bonus and making sure he gets home safe… Are you always so nice to everyone?” She asks innocently.

“If you could read my mind…” I tease her, chuckling to myself. But her innocent look lingers.

Oh boy, is she in for an awakening…

“Hey!” I announce suddenly, “How about I watch you open some of those presents?’ I ask.

Feeling my heart and crotch swell when she shrieks, squeezing hold of my arm again.

Skipping across to the tree and bending over, pretending like she doesn’t want the biggest ones first.

And me?

I’m feeling like the luckiest man alive.

Soon we’re gonna have the whole place to ourselves. And then I can give her the only gift she's gonna remember.

Chapter 8

Eve

Ricky’s behavior is no real surprise. But he’s drank stronger things than furniture polish and lived, so I’m sure he’ll be fine.

And both Ike and Ezekiel don’t even seem to mind that much.

It’s almost as if Ezekiel especially thinks it’s all a bit amusing. But I know why he’s so happy. And secretly, not so secretly. So am I. It means it’ll just be the two of us… And Ronnie. But he sleeps like a log if he’s been drinking. He shouldn’t surface until sometime tomorrow.

And once Ezekiel suggests I start opening some presents, well. I feel every little bit like a birthday girl at Christmas should. Especially seeing as this is the most special a Christmas or birthday I’ve ever had in my whole.

Almost forgetting all about Ricky, mama and Ike. Almost able to shut out all the comings and going happening outside the dining room as I feel his protective, hungry eyes on me.

Watching me pick which gifts I wanna open first. But staying in his seat at the table for some reason, even when I call him over.

“I can see from here…” He rasps, “…Just fine.”

I’ve never seen a tree so big indoors, and never in my life did I think I’d see so many beautifully wrapped boxes with my name on them. It’s overwhelming me, but I know I need to keep a brave and grown up face for Ezekiel.

For dadd-

Eve! What did we say about all that? You can’t ever call him that. He’ll think you’re backwards like Ricky and Ronnie…

I can’t help it though. Ezekiel’s like a whole world of family mixed with the perfect man, all rolled into one.

A step brother, a new friend. Maybe even a boyfriend if it wasn’t for the step brother thing… But more than all that, he makes me feel safe. Protected. Spoiled just by being in his company.

Everything a real daddy would and should be when it comes to his baby girl… But there is the other thing too. That boyfriend, man and girl part.
