“So, so much,” I agreed, my hips already moving to rub my clit against his fingers.

“Greedy... I like it. But if we start again, we’ll never make it to the hall. Go wash off that wolf cum, so I have a fresh canvas later tonight,” he ordered, pinching lightly at my clit before hopping off the bed.

“See you in the hall,” I said, sighing as he closed the door behind him. I made quick work of a bath and chose my outfit carefully, avoiding the frilly dresses I’d ordered as well as the slinky fabric Rush preferred. Instead, I shimmied into my battle leathers and strapped on all the knives my soul craved.

I didn’t know what Merden was planning, but I was done playing pretty princess for her and her merry band of noble twats.

CHAPTER FOUR

KANA

I made it into the banquet hall just as Merden was beginning her announcements.

Surprisingly, Kas and Luca were seated together, although they’d left an empty chair between them. I slid into it, feeling their appreciative glances on my leather-clad body.

“You two look good enough to eat, and I’ve got the next round,” I murmured before they could say anything. Kas smirked and Luca flushed a little, high on his cheekbones. I grinned at him, loving how easy he was to get a reaction from.

The nobles were seated in clumps around Merden, looking a bit dazed and more subdued than normal. There were no blood slaves in sight, and I wondered if they were still acting differently or if Merden had figured out a way to subdue them, too. I hadn’t seen Jax in a long time.

“Dude. She called your name,” Kas hissed, tapping the table in front of Luca. The wolf blinked, having been caught zoning out as well.

“Up here, please, all four of you,” Merden called, and I realized I hadn’t been listening to her stupid prattle either. “Jillian, yes, welcome. Our very own Professor Rainier. Janus, of course. We can’t have one sibling without the other. So much talent in one family! And our very own mystery man, Luca. The largest vampire I’ve ever met.”

Luca glared at her - half the room knew he was a wolf by now, and the mist obviously approved. It was stupid to keep up the charade.

“This whole thing is stupid,” I mumbled, feeling impatient. What was my aunt up to now?

“She definitely has a few favorites, doesn’t she?” Kas murmured, scanning the row. “No idea what the wolf is doing up there, though.”

“The Trial of the Flower Moon begins with these four, and it begins tonight,” Merden announced, and I narrowed my eyes at her. What a cunt, always doing things without warning us.

The mist was here, curled around the chair legs and climbing the walls like translucent vines, but it wasn’t interfering in any way.

“Tonight I want to bring your memories back to your childhood. How many times did you hear the stories like ‘Flowers Under the Ice’ and ‘All the Animals We Cannot See’?” Merden held up two leather-bound books with gilded titles, and the crowd murmured to themselves, many of them smiling and nodding. I glanced questioningly at Kas, who just shrugged.

“I know those, but my mother preferred others,” he said, although that hadn’t been what I was wondering. What did these stories have to do with the rest of the Trials?
