“It’s no trouble.” She tilts her head to her nephew, “And he’ll pay the bill.”

I wrinkle my nose. That’s exactly the problem. “It’s all right, really.”

Annette isn’t pleased, but she hides it. “Very well. Have this boy call me if there’s anything else. I’m glad to have met you, Morgan.”

I watch her gather her things and leave, plagued by a strange feeling I can’t pinpoint.

When Camden returns from escorting her to the door, I say, “What was that?”

“Annette’s my mother’s sister,” he says, like that explains anything.

“Sure. She said she was your aunt.” As she looks nothing like him, or his tall, dark, and handsome father, I assume she’s probably from his maternal side. “So? Why did she want to do blood tests, and look at me with that much interest?”

Camden sits at the end of the sofa and brings my feet to his lap.

“Stop touching me.” I move my legs down to the floor. “And don’t avoid my questions.”

“She’s protective of me, that’s all. She wanted to check you for STDs, most likely. But she was curious—and happy—to meet you because she can tell I’m interested in you. I don’t call the head of the Thorn Falls clinic to check just anyone’s feet on a Sunday evening.”

“She’s the head of the Thorn Falls clinic?” Christ, talk about a waste of her time. “And I don’t have a STD.”

“I know. You’d have to have sex for that. Well, I mean, the blow jobs might have done the trick, but Aryan, Liam and Richard are part of the Heritage. We’re clean—and we get tested monthly. Do you blow Trent?”

Like I’d answer that.

“What makes you think I’m not fucking my way through LA?” I retort, to annoy him more than anything.

“Trent told me you’re making him wait.” A smug smirk spread over Camden’s face. “He thinks it’ssweet. He doesn’t get that the only reason you’re not spreading your pretty legs for him is because you don’t want him.”

I just shoot him the finger.

Never mind the fact that he’s not entirely wrong.

The truth is, I’m not attracted to Trent. I’ve known that for some time. He’s objectively handsome, but it does little for me. Nothing about him or the way he touches me arouses me. That’s why we haven’t done much; even kissing him leaves me indifferent. I figured I could grow to like him with time. People get into arranged marriages without ever seeing each other and make it work, somehow. I could learn to fancy a handsome, kind boy, right?

But for what it’s worth, I’m attracted to Camden Hunt. I wouldn’t have let him touch me like he did earlier otherwise.

God, what a mess.

I have to break up with Trent, because stringing him along now that I’ve worked that out feels wrong. It doesn’t mean I intend to do anything with Camden. He’s wrong for me. I suspect he’s wrong for anyone; he’s just too selfish and used to having his own way to function well with another person. And he’s not truly interested in me, just what’s between my legs. He’d gladly burn down my world to get it, but I’m the one who’d have to live with what’s left.

“Can you take me back home now?”

“Not yet. I just drove two hours. It’s late. Let’s have dinner and chill a bit before we head back.”

At least he intends to take me back today. “Chill?” I narrow my eyes.

God, I hate him and his cocky, sexy grins. “Beer, steak, maybe some TV, good company. Actual chilling with friends. You should try it, sometimes.”

“What, you plan on braiding my hair and painting my nails?” I roll my eyes. “I’m not Netflix and chilling with you, Camden.”

“Uh-huh.” He turns the TV on, and switches to the app I just named, just to annoy me. “So, murder or magic shit?”

He can be so childish when he wants to. And Idon’tthink it’s cute.

ChapterTwenty-Six

I pick murder.
