It sounds like a question rather than an edict, which I appreciate. I nod, and he returns toward the house, calling, "The rest of the case is chilling in the fridge!"

"You're the best!" Toni yells back. Then the moment he's out of view, she fixes me with a demanding stare. "Okay, spill."

I wince. For all she knows, I'm seeingTrent.

Which I am, technically, but only for the next few hours.

"It's not what you think."

She puffs out a laugh. "Please. He had us moved into a McMansion when you asked him for help, and he just basically offered to get me out of murder charges because I bought you ice packs. You need anything, you let me know,”she quotes in a not-so-terrible impression of Cam’s lilt. “It'stotallywhat I think." She cracks a wicked grin. "Now tell me."

I groan. "We're not together. Seriously."

"So, it's just sex?"

"I'm not having sex with him." She stares me down until I add, "Yet."

"No, I can't imagine that'd work out too well with your ribs."

I nod, flinching at the idea of what Camden will have me do tomorrow.Breathingis hard. I'm in no state to jump his bones. Not sure he cares, though.

"And Trent," I add. "I'm breaking up with him today. He's popping by in an hour. I wanted to do it in person, you know."

I should have already done it, but I've had a packed week and sad as it is, he hadn’t figured anywhere near the top of my list of priorities.

"You're a better person than I am. I totally would have jumped that, Trent or no Trent."

That's the second roommate who’s told me they'd happily fuck another guy behind his back. Poor Trent. Not that I can judge, given what happened on Sunday.

Trent arrives on time, bearing a bouquet and a get-well card. "Hey. How are the ribs?"

"Terrible," I tell him, taking the flowers. "Thank you."

Though they do nothing to assuage the guilt crawling inside me, I'm glad he brought them to me. It gives me something to do. I head to the kitchen, and look through the mostly empty cabinets until I find a water pitcher to use as a vase.

"Sweet place. It must be a lot more expensive than the old one."

"A friend is lending it to us temporarily."

He whistles. "Good friends."

I spend far too much time fluffing up the leaves and messing with the angle of each flower, but finally, I spell it out. "So, I'm going back to my hometown."

"Oh?"

I nod, and add, "Uh-huh,” for good measure. “I got into Rothford U.”

His eyes widen and his mouth falls. “Seriously? Don’t they send acceptance letters, like, in the spring?"

"I got, err, a late entry. You know, someone changed their plan, I was next on the list, something like that. They called, and I just can't let the opportunity pass me by." I'm rambling now, as I tend to when I lie.

He doesn't know me well enough to realize that. "That's great, Morgan. I get it. So, you didn't call me because you were desperate to see me, huh?" He attempts a smile, but fails. "You're breaking up with me."

"I'm sorry." I don't feel sorry so much as relieved.

He takes it well. He's even happy for me. He squeezes my hand and wishes me good luck.

I feel terrible through the entire ordeal, but it's done. I'm officially single.
