That also meant he was coming my way. The sound of his sneakers hitting the floor drew closer. If he came in here, I would be caught red-handed. There was no way of escaping it.

I sighed a breath of relief when my brain caught up and noticed the box of Kleenex. Ripping some fresh tissues out of the box, I cautiously tiptoed around the empty bottle of lube, mustering up the courage to pick it up and throw it in the bin together with the used tissues. In and out, I breathed, as if I was going to dive into the middle of an ocean. I squinted one eye closed as I reached out to bundle the clean handkerchiefs around the dirty ones.

Gross!

At least it had almost dried.

I gagged when another thought entered my mind.

At least it wasn’t warm anymore.

Oh, God, Dita. That was the worst idea ever.

Besides moving in.

I ran off to Ares’ desk, keeping it at arm’s length, and halting when I spotted movement.

“Holy shit!” I gasped.

My heartrate spiked as I stepped in front of a terrarium. One wall of his bedroom existed solely out of glass, filled with plants, some thick tree branches, bark and… snakes.

Two, to be exact.

So that was what Cary meant. Not, you know…Ares’ huge—

I coughed.

Slanting my head, I studied one, admiring the creamy whiteness of the scales from head to tail. Weirdly enough, its blue eyes softened its features. It looked special, and kind of cute for its size. I fingered the glass, rubbing it as if I was able to pet the animal. “Hey, sweetie pie.”

Hands descended on my waist. Warmth tickled my ear. “Hey, prude.”

I screamed, my lungs expanding to the fullest. My back bounced against a solid chest as I flung my arms into the air, losing grip on the litter that either came down with a thud or floated into the air like small parachutes. I bent forward, catching my breath to see Ares.

“Wow, chill, Double D.”

I hissed. “You freaked the fucking bones right out of me!”

“What the hell is this?” he grumbled, ignoring my near-death experience and nudging the bottle I’d dropped with his sneaker. I didn’t miss the way his eyes roamed over me as he drawled lazily, “And what are you doing in my room?”

“I…” I swallowed, erasing the dryness in my throat. Reviving from the heart attack, I cocked my hip and crossed my arms. “Well, I was cleaning up.”

His reserved gaze darkened. I didn’t know what I detested more. This look, or the way he looked at me yesterday in bed, trying to reap out my soul with those silver orbs. “I don’t think we discussed this.”

“No, I don’t think we did,” I narrowed my eyes and gave him a suspicious glare before I trained it on the things at his foot.

He lifted a brow, looking all arrogant. The twins were art. If Satan had painters, they’d hang up on the walls of his residence, hanging like forbidden fruit. Although I didn’t like to admit it, Ares’ tattoos and piercing added a tad extra to his appeal.

“First warning, prude.”

“What for?” I jutted my chin, keeping my head high while I saw his eyes smolder.

“You don’t get to come here anymore,” he warned.

“And you think that’s a problem for me, why?”

He folded his hand around my throat. His thumb brushed the indent, right where he could cut me off from air if he’d squeeze tight. I wouldn’t care if he’d do that. I’d rather go down fighting then run like I had before.

Maybe it was because it was one on one. Maybe because there was something wrong with me. Or maybe…maybe I was just tired of getting pushed into a corner all the time.
