I shake my head and turn to walk out. Outside, the club atmosphere vanishes, and the alcohol seems to pound through my veins. I get to the car and struggle to get the key into the hole to unlock it.

“Hey, bro. Whatcha doing?” Andre asks.

“Trying to unlock the door.” I continue fussing over it.

“It’s keyless, bro.” He turns to his date. “I need to get him home.”

“No. I’ll call a cab.”

“Okay.” Andre takes the keys from me and opens the back door. “Come on.”

He takes my phone, holds it to my face for it to unlock, and dials a number.

Fucker!

I lie across the back seat and wait for the cab.

“Jamie, I need you to wake up,” Gina says.

“You came to sleep with me tonight?” I ask her.

“I don’t really think there is enough room back there for me.”

“Hmm?” I open my eyes to see that I am still in the back of the car. “Fuck. I just knew I’d made it to my bed.”

“No, you didn’t make it anywhere.”

I sit up, pull my feet into the car, and she closes the back door. She gets in the driver’s seat and starts the car. She gets me the greasy cheeseburger I want with fries and a coke, then I take me home and I fall into bed.

I feel her curl up beside me, and then the rest of the world fades as I sleep.

A valve explodes in a submarine we are on. We can hear the whistling of the pressure through the entire tank. We work to get it fixed until it gives up. Water is filling up fast, and all the exits are failing. We’ll never make it to the shore before it fills. Panic fuels us all. With no escape, no gear, and water at chest level, we are shit out of luck. The faces of my unit turn blue as they drown one after another.

I can’t breathe, and my time is running out. Flashes of another life make me wish that my time isn’t now to die.

As water fills my lungs, hope buries itself at the bottom of the tank, along with the rest of us.

I gasp for air, sitting straight up in the bed, looking around for the pending dangers.

“Baby, I’ve got you.” Gina rubs my back and says affirmations as I struggle to breathe and pull myself from the dream. “You’re safe. Home. Wherever your mind took you, it wasn’t where you are now.”

“It felt real,” I admit.

“But it wasn’t.”

I get up from the bed and go downstairs for water. Looking at the glass, flashbacks of my dream cycle through my memory. I see them losing oxygen while I lived. Was I the reason?

I stand there trying to get a grip on reality, but I can’t shake it. Instead, I feel death all over me, inside and out. Feeling someone looking at me, I notice Gina in the doorway.

She reaches out her hand. “Come here for a second.”

Afraid of the water I got, I leave it on the counter. I go to her, taking her hand, and she walks me into the bathroom. She strips us both and turns on the shower. I look at the water, not trusting that it won’t drown us both.

“I’ve got you. Trust me. I won’t let anything happen to you. And you’ll protect me too, right?”

I nod, still staring at the water.
