“Nobody saw anything,” he said. “Now move aside.”

“You’re not coming in here!”

“If you want me to stand outside the window yelling at you, someone will definitely see.”

I paused, debating my choices. Alek was stubborn, that much was certain. Even if I left him out there and ignored him, he would find a way to get inside.

If I just let him in, at least he wouldn’t be on Theia’s security cameras.

“Hurry up,” I said, backing away from the window. “And don’t touch anything.”

Alek pulled himself up and through my window, landing on his feet inside my apartment.

“So this is how you spend your Saturday nights?” he questioned. I felt myself getting nervous as he looked around my apartment. He seemed so much taller inside.

My apartment was kept tidy at all times. My white furniture matched the white walls, and not a single thing felt out of place.

Still, my heart rate increased as he walked over to my color-coded bookshelf, running his finger across the spines of my dozens of romance novels. I waited for some sort of snarky remark about the titles, but Alek only smiled softly.

“Did you come here to creep into my apartment?” I asked. “Or do you actually need something?”

I prayed that Alek couldn’t tell how nervous he made me. After the way he touched me, I couldn’t look at him without wishing we were closer. I couldn’t even be in the same room as him without wishing he was kissing my neck again.

Alek turned away from my shelves and took a deep breath. “My father wants to invite you to dinner.”

“Okay,” I said, mulling over the words. “And you couldn’t tell me that over the phone?”

It was strange to see Alek tense up when he talked about his father. He was one of the most intimidating people I had ever met, which wasn’t saying much, but he was still apprehensive around his own father.

But I was beginning to understand why. It was clear his father didn’t like him so much.

“This will be different,” he started. “He’s going to be drilling you with questions. He’ll be pushy and rude and arrogant.”

“Nothing I’m not used to,” I said with a smirk.

Alek crossed the living room and sat on the edge of my couch, resting his elbows on his knees and running his hands through his hair. “This isn’t a joke, Lyra. We need to get our story straight.”

“What story? We’re in a relationship now. What else would he want to know?”

“He’ll want to know how we met. He’ll want to know about you, about your family.” It became my turn to tense up. He noticed. “Is that a problem?”

“Talking about us won’t be a problem. We’ll just tell the truth, leaving out the part where we made a deal neither of us can back out of.”

Alek nodded.

“But my family…” I shook my head. “There’s not much to say. And my mother would be pissed if she found out about—”

“Like I’ve promised a hundred times, your mother will never know.”

“What would he possibly need to know about my family? My mother is hardly around. I’ve never known my father. Story over.”

Alek’s green eyes blared into me with such intensity, it was almost as if they could see the truth.

I moved to sit on the couch, putting a safe distance between us. “I’ll tell him my mother and I haven’t been in contact for a few years. Work and travel have kept her busy. That should keep him from asking anything else.”

I watched as he considered the words. “What if he asks you about her work? About what she does?”

I shrugged. This conversation was getting dangerously close to questions I could not answer. “How should I know? I’m the last person she would discuss her business with.”
