Chapter 17

Cahill

I can’t believe what has just happened. My woman was almost kidnapped today, Liam just saved her, and his own ass, then she steps in to defend Liam. And the worst part is I played all my cards in front of Liam and Ruairi. Now they both know I am in love, like the idiot I am. I watch as my doll walks out the door smiling to herself and believing she is one tough cookie, when she shouldn’t have to be. I should be able to protect her. That is the hardest pill to swallow, I might not be able to protect her like I think I can. I turn around to Liam, who is lying on my sofa.

“You can stop acting so hurt now. She is gone and thinks I’m a monster.” I laugh to him.

I know he is in pain, but I didn’t go in too deep, it was more of a surface wound to remind him what is at stake here. Ruairi plunks himself down on the chair in front of my desk while I sit on my own chair again.

“I liked her taking care of me. I am jealous, I wish I had someone waiting on me at home,” Liam tells us, his tone of voice normal. Though he grunts as he sits up. I do feel bad that I have a wonderful woman, and she loves me despite everything, but again, I am a selfish bastard, and I love the fact they are jealous. They should be, she is definitely one of a kind.

“We are going off track here, and I do have someone waiting on me, so can we hurry along.”

Ruairi has Lauren waiting for him. He couldn’t leave till he knew Sophie was ok, because Lauren would have his balls if anything happened to her best friend. Also, she is a lawyer, I am sure Ruairi is thinking of the benefits that might have for us.

“I sat two tables over from Sophie while she spoke to her mother. He was in Sophie’s life until she turned two. He has kept his distance, but he watches her, he knows everything about her life. The mother is still in contact with him. He had them shipped to Muff to protect them. He is a unionist, and the mother is catholic. If his side found out he was having a baby with the enemy, she would have been killed. The mother believes her lover, Sophie’s father, is trying to protect her. You are the monster, and he is trying to get you away from her, but the mother didn’t know that he sent a bomb to Sophie and ran you off the road. She told her mam that you are keeping her safe and to inform her father to back off and leave you both alone. I really doubt the mother will pass that information on. Also, I am not sure the kidnapper is working with her father because Sophie told me he said she was going to die, twice, but from what the mother said, it seems the father just wants her away from you. I honestly don’t think he wants to hurt her. And I don’t think the kidnapper is working with the families either. It could be a lone wolf looking to hold her to get a pay out from you. Just saying.”

Wow that is a lot to take in, I don’t even know if Liam took a breath.

“What is her father's name?”

I want to know if the name we have is correct, Harry Evans, and then we might be able to find information on him.

“Sophie forgot to ask, and her mother didn’t let it slip once. I think the mother knew Sophie wasn’t there alone. This is not her first rodeo.”

So, we haven’t been able to confirm her father's name. We know Sophie was attacked today, like we guessed would happen, but we didn’t foresee Liam’s car getting sabotaged. So, it’s someone that knows us very well to know our personal cars. I got the text from one of the guys that works in the casino that he had seen Sophie with a guy, but he didn’t recognize him, which means it could be anyone. I have a hunch it was Jonathon.

“Where should Jonathon have been today?” I ask both men in front of me.

“He had planned to spend the day with his mother in hospital. She doesn’t have long to live- cancer. I don’t think Jonathon has any other family. I have seen him break down in the garage a few times over the past few months,” Ruairi says while he stands up. I know he is as frustrated as me. We both want the problem fixed so we can move on.

“Right, tomorrow I will talk to the Italians about the launch night and see about maybe visiting Jonathon. I just need to see his reaction to me. But for now, I need to go have dinner with my woman.”

I stand up and wipe down my shirt in an attempt to straighten it. “Thank you, gentlemen. See yourselves out.”

I head down for dinner and see Jones setting it out for us, but I don’t see Sophie.

“Is not she down yet?” I ask Jones.

“No, I thought you told her to wash up. She is a woman. It could be hours before she is ready,” he says while laughing. Men are just as bad, and Jones knows it.

I walk back up the stairs to find Sophie, humming away to myself as I go. I don’t hear the water or hair dryer or anything, which is making me panic so I run to my room and slam open the door.

What do I find?

Sophie passed out on our bed with my t-shirt on, and some movie playing, I’m about to turn off the movie when I notice what is on…365 DNI. Oh my, little doll was being naughty with watching this movie. It would be her life being made into a book or movie at the moment. I tuck her in and head back down for food. She is safe and I am starving.

I eat, do some paperwork and check over the casino launch night guest list, and head to bed to snuggle with my woman. Like the lucky bastard I am.

The next morning, I wake up to an empty bed, and I don’t like it. I usually like to have a little kiss before I get out of bed to remind Sophie who is in charge, or what is to come later after work. I get up and dress, then stroll downstairs to find my woman dancing about, singing some song with Bonnie and Clyde, how she is his or die and all eyes are on them. Guessing another country song. ButI wonder who this is by and if she is singing about us. I sneak up behind her and kiss her neck, she squeaks in my arms.

“Oh God, Cahill. You trying to kill me?” She playfully slaps my chest.

“No, doll. I missed you in bed when I woke up. I needed my fill of you,” I say, kissing her neck and laughing. I wasn’t trying to kill her. She would know if I was. Sophie makes breakfast as I grab the coffee for me and tea for her.

“I kinda need to run, so I will take my pancakes with me. Sorry, doll,” I say as I kiss her forehead.

“We will see each other at dinner time.” She smiles back at me.
