Flustered.

Instead of lingering in the hall, I went back to the entrance of my house, this time in search of my damn gun. I found it placed neatly on the foyer table where Onyx had to have left it after he’d disarmed me like it was nothing.

Probably a good thing because, through the course of that whole infuriating conversation, if I’d still been armed, I may have shot him just to shut him the hell up.

With a heavy breath, I moved on, going back to my room. I hesitated for just a moment with my hand on the lock, because… was there even a point?

If he wanted to get in here, he’d already made it clear that he could.

And as Brandon had already forced me to admit… I didn’t think I was in any jeopardy here.

Which was nuts, considering how much of a shift that was from my previous feelings about the man.Hewas absolutely still a dangerous man, but that didn’t mean he would do any harm tome.

The only thing at risk here was the emptiness of my pussy, honestly.

I turned the lock.

If nothing else, having to unlock it to get out would givemesomething to think about.

My phone lit up in my hand, pulling my attention, and I frowned when I looked at the screen. I had several missed calls, all from Kev. It had been in my pocket, outside my sight line which meant outside my attention.

I rolled my eyes, notreallywanting to make a habit of answering his calls in the middle of the night. We didn’t need to set that kind of precedent, but since he’d called multiple times… it was probably best to see what was going on.

“Where have you been?” he asked as soon as the video call connected and I frowned.

“I’m going to give you a chance to correct yourself,” I warned, already annoyed.

“My bad,” he said, lifting a hand at the screen. “But I’ve been calling and you’re not answering—I got worried.”

I nodded. “I understand that, but it’s the middle of the night. Why not just assume I’m asleep?”

“You’re right. My inability to sleep isn’t yours.”

Now that he mentioned it… I could clearly see the tiredness in his eyes, which meantheshould be sleeping himself. “What’s going on? Why can’t you sleep?”

“I was up working on the books for a client, and then… my thoughts wandered. Can’t get my mind off this treasurer job,” he admitted. “I know, you’re not supposed to play favorites, but… you at least talked me up to Blue about it, right?”

I sighed. “Brandon and I have talked about it. He hasn’t made the final decision yet.”

“Okay… is it at least looking good for me, or…?”

“He will let you know what he decides, but I’ll be honest with you; Gavin’s father did this job. And he was killed in service to the club. Both of those things hold alotof weight.”

“But it’s not the end all, right?”

“Right,” I agreed, even though really… his chances were very, very low. “Like I said, Brandon will let you know.”

“Okay. Okay,” he repeated, sounding way more relieved than he had any reason to be. “Hey, if you weren’t asleep, why didn’t you answer the phone?”

“Well, because this ismyphone. I’ll answer it or not, if and when Iwantto,” I explained with a grin. “The other reason is that I was handlingPredatorbusiness.”

“This late? I don’t know if I like that,” he told me, brow furrowed at the screen.

I frowned. “Excuse me?”

“You being up in the middle of the night, talking shop, in dangerous shit…”

“Um… I appreciate the concern, but it’s…notyour concern,” I reminded him. “Maybe you and I need to cool off a bit. I feel like the lines are getting a bit blurred.”
