“You’re right. If you’re going to date a guy with the same name as me, I guess you better call me Samantha,” she grinned.

“I think I am busy for dinner tomorrow night,” I said.

“Going out with the other Sam?”

I shrugged. “No. Probably just going to do something like wash my hair.”

She huffed. “In other words, you want me to drop this topic.”

“Finally, you get it,” I sighed. “But seriously, I don’t think I can make it to dinner. I have so much work to catch up on. I hadn’t been planning the last-minute renovation and put off so much to accomplish it.”

“And now you need to take it all down. I’d be pissed too,” she said.

“Pissed? Maybe at Bob, his friend. And maybe at myself too. But I just feel bad for Sam. It’s like he was violated.”

She laughed. “I wouldn’t go that far. Granted, you made a huge mistake, but no permanent damage was done.”

“Just to my ego.”

“Well, you’ll need to get over that. If not, it’s going to hold you back. Maybe from something that’s right in front of you,” she said.

“I thought you agreed to stop talking about Sam,” I reminded her.

“Funny. I never said his name. I mean, I thought he was the forbidden topic? Maybe that was just for me, and not for you,” she teased.

“Are you done eating?”

“Can’t wait to get away from me?” she asked.

Yes.

“I already told you; I have a lot of work to catch up on.”

She put her napkin on the table and said, “I’m full. Guess we can go.”

I paid the bill and we headed to my car. Now I was regretting not meeting her here because I was forced to give her a ride home. Thankfully, we didn’t live all that far from the diner and before I knew it, we’d said our goodbyes and I was alone.

Looking at my watch, I knew I had some time to kill before heading to Sam’s. Did I have a lot of work to do? Yes. Was I going home to do any of it? No. I was still exhausted and if I was lucky, I’d have enough time to take a nap before dinner.

I walked into the house, kicked off my shoes and headed right to the bed. As soon as I laid down and closed my eyes, I sat straight up.

The potato salad.

What was I thinking? I offered to bring it and the last thing I wanted was to show up empty handed.

I rushed to the kitchen and looked in the pantry. With all the hours I put into working at Sam’s house, I hadn’t gone grocery shopping and didn’t even have potatoes in the house.

So much for a nap.

I slipped on my sneakers again, grabbed my keys and headed for the market. When I pulled into the parking lot I was dreading going inside. It seems like everyone was there, probably shopping for the big football game that was going to be later tonight.

The option to buy something already prepared was a good way to cut corners, but it wouldn’t be the same at all. Usually, cooking was something I did to relax, and I enjoyed it. Right now, it was adding to my already high stress level.

I should’ve offered to make a fresh green salad instead.

I shut off the car and reluctantly went inside as I made a mental shopping list. Since I was here, I might as well stock up on other things I was out of too.

Who knows. Maybe I’ll be making him dinner next.

Instead of a quick stop, I purchased so much food that if I didn’t invite Sam over to dinner, there was no way I could eat it all.

Get through tonight first before thinking about tomorrow.

I cashed out and headed back home to start cooking. Somehow, my sister’s voice had haunted me in the store, and I wasn’t just bringing potato salad and wine any longer. I had just enough time to pull off a chocolate lava cake too.

Watch out Sam Bethel. You’re about to experience some sweet eats.

Now I just hope he likes chocolate.
