Fuck, fuck,fuck!

“Behold!” Janice shouted. “Baus approaches!”

“Fuck that!” Grant shouted back, frantically trying to find more energy. He didn’t have enough to push his way through the haze that was trapping him here, which meant he certainly didn’t have enough to fight off Baus.

He needed another source of power and fast.

“There is nothing you can do!” Janice cackled. “Oh, but please. Go on struggling. I’m really enjoying watching you squirm. I wish I was here in person so I could take a picture of it.”

Wait.

Janice was projecting herself into the haze somehow, which meant…

Grant had an idea. It was insane, but he was desperate.

And Baus was getting closer.

Baus was a behemoth, a staggering mass of deep red shadows with two raging fires blazing away where his eyes should have been. His mouth opened as he roared, revealing a gaping black hole that spewed out a plume of smoke. The sound was inhuman and made the ground beneath Grant’s feet tremble.

“Nope, nope, nope! You can just fuck all the way off!” Grant yelled. “I’m getting the fuck outta here!”

“Please do try,” Janice taunted. “It’ll make this so much more fun.”

“Gargle my fuckin’ nutsack, Janice.” Reaching out toward her, Grant clawed at the air and sought out the energy she was using to project the illusion.

This was similar to the technique he used to balance his energy with Huck, but right now he wasn’t trying to give a few jolts away to hold hands.

He was going to takeeverythingfrom Janice.

Well, if it worked.

Grant wasn’t actually a hundred percent sure if this was possible on a living person, but mediums being on a similar wavelength to spirits was a common theory. Having never met one, he had no idea if that was true. If it was, however, it meant he should be able to manipulate Janice’s energy just like a ghost’s.

Grant didn’t care how fancy and detailed her big stupid evil plan was.

He was stronger.

He was smarter.

He could do this.

He was going to fucking win.

Okay, andyes, while having a giant Aztec god stalking toward him was extremely motivating, all that he could think about now was escaping and making sure Huck was okay.

There!

He gasped when he found it, tiny and faint, but it was a thread of spiritual residue peeking through the haze and out the other side.

Back inside the hotel!

Grant twisted his fingers into it over and over like winding up a length of runaway yarn. He closed his eyes and used his other senses to zero in on the rush of sensation and where it led to, and he drew it toward him to get a better grip. It wasn’t just Janice’s power, he realized. No, this was ancient and vast, and it had to be from where Janice was tapping into Baus’s energy.

Janice was clearly not powerful enough to have trapped Grant here on her own. She’d used Baus’s energy to help her, and he had to break through it to escape. The sudden strain in Grant’s arms and chest was painful, but he didn’t let go. The muscles throughout his upper body were tense enough to snap, his heart thumping so hard that it hurt, and his breaths were a staggered litany of sharp pants.

And then…

He saw something.
