NATALIE

“The Primordials aren’t talked about much—or rather, at all. They are formless gods with unlimited power, and they predate all life,” Fate continued.

Despite the pang of dislike that hit me every time I looked at her now, I listened quietly. What she’d done to Rumir would have to be addressed, but after this crisis was over. Right now, I needed to know about these higher gods who stood above the Imperium.

“They are raw power capable of molding realms and universes. Tedara became the embodiment of chaos,” she added, again changing into her child form. “Darkness, time, and light are such beings as well, but Tedara was the first to take a form.”

“Did any of the others do the same?” I asked, and she shook her head.

“Not that we know of,” Heldon, who'd remained silent until now, replied. "Tedara was sealed away by the gods, but somehow, she's breaking free."

Perhaps that was the person I’d seen in my vision, this Mother of Chaos? It made sense if she was behind the virus and I was seeing visions related to it.

But I'd had a vision about the virus long ago, back when I’d been knocked on my ass at the ball at Poseidon's castle. I hadn't been infected then.

"Why was Tedara sealed away to begin with?" Lucian asked, and Heldon looked hesitant for a moment.

“Her nature is to create chaos. We left her unchecked for a while, but she was destroying everything,” Heldon finally replied.

I had a feeling there was much more to that story…

“This virus is just a taste of the chaos she could create. And if she manages to escape, she won't stop at just the God Realm." Zeus's voice sounded harsh, but as faint as it was, there was also fear hidden in it. “She’ll destroy everything.”

“So what you have is no longer just a virus, Natalie.” Hekate ran a hand down the snake wrapping around her. “The divinity within it belongs to Tedara and has now become a part of you, just as you hold divinity from the Werewolf Goddess. Tedara will start reaching out to you, and with that connection, you should be able to end this.”

Everyone in the room looked like they were on the same page… except for me.

"So let me get this straight. You think I can kill a being who created the universe itself—and you guys, by the way—just because I have a bit of her divinity?” I looked from one god to the next. “I mean no disrespect, but are you joking?”

"I assure you, this isn't a joke.” Zeus rested his elbows on the arm of his chair and locked his fingers. “And no, we don’t want you to kill her. Primordials can’t be killed. We want you to help us discover where the virus is seeping into the realm—a portal or rip between the realms—so we can close it.”

“So the virus has already spread to Earth?” Rumir asked.

Hekate shook her head. “Not yet,” she answered. “But it’s only a matter of time. And Earth is only just rebuilding from the vampire war that took your life, Natalie.”

“So what does it mean that Natalie now has divinity from Tedara?” Lucian asked.

I pointed at him, nodding. “Yes, please explain. I’m an Enchanted, so I already carry a small amount of divinity from one goddess.”

“And perhaps that is the reason the virus—or more so the divinity in the virus—is bonding with you,” Hekate said. “You already have divinity, which makes you a good host for the power to grow. It probably fed on the Werewolf’s Goddess’s loaned power to help it evolve. I don't know that for certain, though. It's just my theory."

“It’s the same as when the Werewolf Goddess gave white wolves her divinity. Only in this case, it wasn't planned. And frankly, we've never seen this before," Zeus said. "The Primordials made us but didn’t give us their divinity, so this is a surprise to us as well." His eyes narrowed almost judgmentally. “It’s risky enough when one of the gods shares their divinity with mortals. And now, a mortal has been given the power of our makers.”

Great, apparently now he envied the power the virus had given me. Well, he was welcome to it! I’d give anything to go back to being uninfected. “Goddess, this is getting out of hand,” I mumbled as I walked away, a hand on my forehead.

Viruses… higher beings, more powerful than the creator gods… Rumir not being my true mate… It was all too much. Now I was a child of a Primordial? I felt like my mind was trying and failing to keep up with everything happening.

"We've been trying to locate the portal or tear between the realms Tedara is using…”

I turned around to look at Heldon, who'd stood up to speak.

"However, with this new development"—He gestured to me—“you can help us. By using your connection to Tedara, you can lead us to her.”

I started shaking my head. All of this was still so fresh… How was I supposed to control what was inside of me, let alone use it to lead the gods to Tedara?

Even more, I didn't know how, or if, I would survive this change I was experiencing.

“I can't do it," I murmured. "I want to be rid of this divinity. I’m not interested in using it and allowing it to change me any further.”
