It was one thing to use me to get to my mother, but another thing altogether to involve an innocent like Natalie. Even though we'd all tried to make our odd circumstances work, Natalie had suffered. She’d been torn between Lucian and me, all while having to deal with our toxic past.

All of that could have been avoided if Fate had kept her nose out of it. Natalie and Lucian could have just been happy together.

My fists clenched so tight my claws dug into my skin. That thought was like a knife in the gut. Even if it had meant Natalie's assured happiness, I couldn't imagine not being with her.

I pressed a finger to the tight crease between my brows. Everything was so messed up… and all because of the damn gods and their petty squabbles. Sometimes they were no better than children.

Fate had said I wouldn’t have had a mate for some time. So in a sense, she'd done me a favor. But I’d found that bit of information particularly upsetting. My mother knew how badly I wanted a mate, yet clearly, she’d done nothing about it. How much longer would she have let me wait?

Another century?

Two?

And why? Why was it necessary for me to remain alone for so long? At least Fate had given me a chance at happiness. Natalie was everything to me. I just wished she’d been meant to be mine from the start.

It was time to speak to my mother. Even if she was still asleep, I knew she’d hear me.

Because this time, I was going to lay it all down.

My wings sprouted from my back, and I took to the sky, my mother's temple as my destination.

As for Natalie… Whether she was my true mate or not, I was going to help her through this.

While I couldn't understand exactly what she must be feeling, I did know what it was like to be a hybrid. And she’d need my help… because she was quickly becoming one.
