Since Natalie would be staying here, Lucian needed to be close, too. So we came up with a solution. He’d come and go as he pleased and would sleep here whenever he felt like it.

I wished my mother was awake to see this. She’d never believe it. Never in a thousand years did I see myself setting foot inside his home, or allowing him in mine.

But Lucian had his own room in my home, as did Rehema and Brian.

I understood how important it was for Natalie to have him close by, so I put aside my own reservations. Given the circumstances, I didn’t see any other options. Besides, if it had been the other way around and she had stayed at his place, nothing could have kept me away.

That aside, I was still trying to wrap my brain around what Fate had done.

From the first time I'd seen Natalie, I'd known she was my everything. At first, I'd been livid about her being with Lucian as well, and a part of me for a time had hoped she'd reject him.

But all along, Lucian had been her true mate and I, the impostor.

I left the room, closing the door before turning to Myleon, my robotic butler.

“Keep an eye on her and give her whatever she wants. But she’s not to leave this house without Lucian or me. Rehema and Brian won’t be returning tonight.”

They’d already stopped by and were told everything we’d discovered. But Natalie had been unable to speak about it and had retired to her room early. Rehema had been so upset about what was happening to her friend, Brian had to take her home. Everyone was losing it right now.

Our worlds were crumbling. And it looked as if we could do nothing to stop it.

Myleon bowed, his golden body bending at the waist. “Yes, sir.”

"Call me if anything happens. I'm going out. Lucian is in his room, I think, or roaming the halls of the house."

“He’s in the library, sir.”

I made a face. “Of course, he is.”

He'd offered to make something for Natalie to eat, but she'd refused.

Myleon remained outside Natalie's door, and I left. Making my way through the halls, I stopped at an open window on the third floor and jumped. Then, after landing on my feet, I started jogging towards the forest at the back of the castle.

I needed air, or I'd suffocate within the walls of my own home. Like werewolves, dragons loved to be free, and right now, a part of me wanted to be far, far away from the mess my life was turning into.

But I couldn't run away from what was going on, and even if I could, I wouldn't. Running away wasn't in my nature—on either side of my lineage.

I stopped jogging when I entered the forest. Moonlight lit the paths, and small critters scampered about while others called to each other in the distance. But my mood only grew worse.

It was a beautiful night, but I couldn't admire it. Natalie should’ve been here by my side so we could laugh and talk and enjoy it together. No beautiful moment was complete without her here to share it with me.

But this day had filled us with nothing but sorrow.

I wasn't surprised she'd turned down the gods' request to help them. They’d dropped a big responsibility in her lap. The last time she’d been given anything close to it was when the Werewolf Goddess had asked her to guide her friend Ruby during the vampire war.

And we all knew how that turned out. Not only had she lost her mortal life, but Natalie now blamed herself for Ruby’s death, and the fact that Xavier had to live without his mate. She’d told me that she’d felt as if she’d failed them, even though she was following the Goddess’s wishes.

Even with the safety of the realm on the line, after what had happened to her before, who wouldn’t hesitate?

Also, she’d had a lot of things thrown at her at once. Anyone in Natalie's position would be more than a little rattled.

Just thinking about what she’d been through made me furious. I spun around and put my fist through a tree trunk. The large trunk split, and the tree groaned as it fell and took another tree with it.

The forest grew silent, and I contained the roar that begged to be released.

Fate had been wrong to do what she did. She knew Lucian and I didn’t get along. And she had to be aware of the disastrous impact the two of us being mated to the same woman would cause.

Still, she’d gone ahead and done it.
